If we're going to argue about whether the risk of overdose is increased when coming off opioids, I suspect a simple cohort study that compares two wildly different populations is unlikely to offer an enormous amount of insight

Also, if we're going to be very technical here, the term "addicts" is offensive and outdated. The study in question looked at people with chronic pain on long-term opioid therapy who I'm sure you didn't mean to dehumanize and belittle
