I thought that was the point of probiotics? Forgive me if I’ve missed something but we want them to colonise the gut post-antibiotics. So they exist as commensals and normal gut flora?

Not really. We want the gut to be restored post antibiotics - if probiotics instead unsettle the gut, it could be either good or bad, depending on whether the microbiome is optimum to start or not

I've seen Lactobacillus in patient's blood cultures before. Not all of these come from a probiotic source, but there are some cases where they definitively show that the probiotic bacteria is the same one that ends up as bactermia:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23426446

An incredible health risk too given gut dysfunction is associated with pretty much everything you want to avoid - IBD, IBS, depression, cancer

If I'm not mistaken they didn't show in the paper that it has negative consequences, this was just assumed. In some cases the original microbiome may be worse. Probiotics is given to patients with UC for example. We still don't know enough I think...

Absolutely. I mentioned this in the thread - can't assume that they're all good or all bad, the reality is that we just don't really know yet either way
