Other breakthrough cancer drugs are also very profitable, such as imatinib, which doubled 5 year survival from CML; the checkpoint inhibitors for melanoma

Literally sat in a conference in Vietnam (http://www.transmedvn.com ) - many talks discussing breakthrough therapies/strategies to increase survival for multiple cancers (checkpoint inhibitors, CART therapies, gene therapies etc). Also talks on reduction of costing for LMIC.

But yeah "big Pharma blocking cures". Sigh. It's a tired and inaccurate rhetoric which also belittles and demonizes the efforts of everyone from basic science to the staff involved in clinical trials.

Even if one type of cancer could be eliminated by an inexpensive treatment, developing treatments for the hundreds of other cancers is a never-ending revenue stream. There is no reason to hide any "cure".

And, of course, it's easier to externalize blame than to take responsibility for preventive lifestyle changes. Because no red-blooded American wants to be told to eat less bacon!

And it’s not like we are going to run out of horrible diseases for them to try and come up with cures for any time soon.
