The info sheet says it was the Dept Human Services ethics cttee that approved it. But to be honest, I'm more worried about the other Medicare based linkage news from today

I'm not sure why everyone's saying linkage in reference to the PBS data - doesn't the DoHS have the full identified PBS data? I've never worked with the dataset but that was my (limited) understanding

Yes and fully identified MBS data. It's called linked when you put the MBS & PBS datasets together

Did they do that here? I thought it was just sending letters based on subscription information

The problem is the letter identifying the recipient as having taken lithium and being eligible for a study of bipolar. Oh no, don't get me wrong it's an enormous issue. We looked into a similar thing for diabetes, and were told that we'd have to use vague terminology like "medical test results" rather than HbA1c to avoid that sort of issue. Just wondering about everyone using the term linkage

They’re using the term linkage because they want to use this issue to motivate people to care about data privacy. And as I keep saying, the issue isn’t the data, here, it’s the disclosure.

I'm trying not to use linkage about this story on particular. But isn't it just a different facet of the same risk?

Yes I agree. Linkage is a very different kettle of fish with much bigger ethical concerns, although the fact that this was entirely down to DHS is concerning in its own right
