In a recent study comparing patients receiving cancer chemotherapy on a ketogenic diet versus control diet, the patients on a ketogenic diet lost less lean mass. This might significantly improve long-term survival after chemotherapy. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2225411018310046 …pic.twitter.com/YiM2SIRxli

Do you mean radiotherapy rather than chemotherapy? Is weight loss desirable during cancer treatment? What makes you speculate that keto would impact disease status or long-term survival?

They lost less lean mass. Lean mass loss is correlated with recurrence and lower overall survival.

AFAIK that's more a measure of how healthy people are before getting cancer, not an argument for losing weight during radiotherapy

Is this your speculation or do you have data to support that? In this study, body fat gain was linked to worse outcomes: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5735658/ … Same as this one: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3000612/ … There are mechanistic reasons to think that fat tissue can fuel breast cancer growth.

But also animal data to suggest that ketones promote breast cancer tumours (as per your previous tweet)? Personally, I wouldn't be touching a KD if I got another BC tumour, based on the current evidence...

Those ketones were injected into mice virtually without an immune system using a cell line-based xenograft. It's just a model and very different from how a human body will interact with a cancer. We know that something like 10-30% of a xenograft's genes are turned off.

But I think you're right to be cautious. I agree with you. I will point out though that many people are glad to hear about BHB accelerating BC but plenty want to patrol my tweets when I tweet about the positive research.

I like to think that I'd be just as critical of an uncontrolled cohort study with as many potential sources for bias as this one regardless of what it found

Few of you anti-keto people were critical of the number of anti-keto papers I posted in recent weeks but suddenly everyone comes out of the woodwork for this one.

Am I anti keto? Always hard to know your own biases, but honestly I don't know if that's fair. And I'm sorry but I only have time for so many twitter arguments, can't get to every trial lol
