You'd better believe I'd ask for a plate of fries if I had a massive infection and had to be on IV antibiotics for a week

Note: I'm not saying 'bad' food. If the food is inedible, people won't eat it!

I strongly disagree. I once woke in a cardiac ward being served a cheeseburger, French fries and carton of milk. In my view that is malpractice. Hospitals are in business to heal people. There is no circumstance in which a patient is better off by being served Mickey Ds.

If heart disease was like getting a cold, I could understand. But it takes decades so a few meals isn't something to fret over. When I was in the hospital for several days, I hardly ate anything. But what I ate was highly caloric, which was probably needed.

People just don't seem to understand that for a hospital food service dietitian it's often a significant challenge to get some patients to eat enough energy to remain alive. That's why the food is often so palatable, easy to eat and high in calories.

Its not going to be very easy to explain to the coroner that the reason why a frail elderly woman with throat cancer starved to death in hospital is because you left her with pile of celery sticks.

Feeding patients healthy food does not cause them to care about their food?
-
The most important thing is to get them well enough to get out of hospital. The community is a much better place to address questions about healthy eating

Options, good. Forcing people who are acutely ill to eat healthy ? Not good. If they’re morbidly obese, perhaps- but I think you’d be surprised how many hospital patients don’t fit that category whatsoever.
