Seriously, read the study here (open access):https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2738622?utm_source=For_The_Media&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ftm_links&utm_term=072419 …

Simply put, the researchers collated existing databases on postmenopausal women, separated them into high/low waist circumference (WC), and then compared the impact of WC vs BMIpic.twitter.com/Vj6VDVDLu0

They found that people with higher WC were unhealthy in a multitude of ways - more smoking, drinking, less exercise etcpic.twitter.com/Ol6itZgSBz

They also found that WC appeared to predict death independently of BMI - if you had a low WC your BMI might not matter so muchpic.twitter.com/hzy6YzHoNk

Conversely, having a high WC was bad even if your BMI was technically normal!pic.twitter.com/OOl7ZwVj7w

Their conclusion? Measure both BMI and WC! Both are easy, both predict issues, why not have the best of both worlds?pic.twitter.com/oYJ3O3TDUB

Another important note - while women with
WC but
BMI were at an increased risk of death, this was a TINY proportion (0.9%) of the population, so in fact a healthy BMI was a very good predictor for 99.1% of people!Show this thread -
TL:DR - headlines are dumb and directly contradict the study - BMI isn't useless it's very useful for most people - WC is also useful - BMI+WC is probably best!
