The basic idea is that this is another large observational trial that's really hard to apply to our every day lives

For one thing, the study found an absolute increased risk of around 1% over 10 years between the highest and lowest consumers of sugary drinks

That means that if 100 people who currently drink virtually no Coke were to quadruple their consumption for a decade, you'd expect to see about 1 additional case of cancerpic.twitter.com/juseavOraE

There's also a fair bit of previous research that has failed to find the link in this study, which means it's a bit less likely that the results are due to sugar intake

It's quite likely that there is residual confounding that the observational nature of the trial didn't address that is the real reason behind the increased risk in cancer seen from sugar consumption

It's also worth noting that when we say "cancer", it's a bit misleading. The study only found an increased risk for "all" cancer and premenopausal breast cancer, but not for colorectal, lung, or postmenopausal breast cancer

Does this mean that sugary drinks are good for your health? Of course not! They are still calorie-dense and nutrient-poor, and you'd probably be healthier if you had less of them

P.s. something I didn't mention in the blog is that the study also found no association whatsoever between artificially-sweetened soft drinks and cancer, which is a fun finding ping
