It's quite likely that there is residual confounding that the observational nature of the trial didn't address that is the real reason behind the increased risk in cancer seen from sugar consumption

It's also worth noting that when we say "cancer", it's a bit misleading. The study only found an increased risk for "all" cancer and premenopausal breast cancer, but not for colorectal, lung, or postmenopausal breast cancer

Does this mean that sugary drinks are good for your health? Of course not! They are still calorie-dense and nutrient-poor, and you'd probably be healthier if you had less of them

P.s. something I didn't mention in the blog is that the study also found no association whatsoever between artificially-sweetened soft drinks and cancer, which is a fun finding ping
