People always wonder how I go about doing the risks like these ones Let me show you the obnoxious world of risking thingshttps://twitter.com/justsaysrisks/status/1150615360015482880 …

So we've got this headline. A "60%" reduced risk of Alzheimer's is usually relative, because even in high-risk populations it's unlikely you'd see more than 20-30% of people who have the diseasepic.twitter.com/pUrIrfP9iG

The first thing I do is track down the study. Googling dementia comes up with this press release that leads me to this study...pic.twitter.com/BOmVyvrnVp

...which, as it turns out is the wrong study. Apparently, it's the American Alzheimer's association annual meeting, so there are lots of press releases out about this study! Ok, we can use that

I head over to the AAIC website, which I've just Googled, and see if I can find their conference program Most conferences publish the abstracts that are going to be presentedpic.twitter.com/TkjhoBrbeC

And we're in luck! There's an interactive tool that allows us to search conference presentations! ...but also out of luck, because the AAIC embargoes their abstracts till after the conference so I can't read them yet 🙄pic.twitter.com/IweKAtiYQ5

Back to the drawing board. I notice that Quartz has posted an article up when I look on Google News They're usually pretty good with stats...pic.twitter.com/yja3MxwqTC

And there you have it. Halfway down a @qz article, the only mention I can find anywhere of the absolute risk reduction. 1/100 to 1/300 is about a 0.7% reduction, but I rounded up to be safepic.twitter.com/8bFeoJ6bDA

Also, don't report on conference abstracts that haven't been published, that way lies dangerpic.twitter.com/SbX93zgM80

I should mention that I am ~deeply~ skeptical of the research, and the idea that you can prevent Alzheimer's through the 5 lifestyle factors presented but I won't say more because I'd like to actually read the study first
