I heard today that not breastfeeding can cause distortions in the baby's mouth and jaw. This sounds like nonsense to me but the amount I know about breastfeeding can adequately be summed up by the phrase "bugger all" Twitter, what's your verdict?

It's interesting, because every time I ask about breastfeeding the answer is "it may be true but all we've got is observational evidence" Are there interventional trials on recommending breastfeeding?

I thought the argument was that breastfeeding aids “optimal tooth / jaw development” not that bottle feeding harms the jaw? I think there’s some research that suggests less tooth decay in breastfed children as well.

Any specific distortions? Sounds like fearmongering to me, especially given that controlling for SES (class) basically negates the benefits of breast over bottle AFAIK

Not that I heard, just a general vague warning of doom to come

Sounds like naturalist bullshit. Wayyy too much shaming by breastfeeders against those who don't/can't.

I’ve not heard this (and my CLC training would 100% have been all over this) nor am I inclined to give it much credence at all. I’ve been in NICU for 10+ years and have never seen/heard/worried about this.

There is systematic review but impossible to work out how the studies controlled for confounding, given all the data are observational - https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/apa.13103 … Classic of pretty much all research in this area - hard to make sense of. any thoughts @SkepticalDDS @SBMPediatrics

You're right, Emma. It's hard to tease out all of the variables and confounding factors, but on the whole, it's generally accepted that there is a relationship between BF and malocclusions. How significant that relationship is is uncertain.

I cover infant feeding a lot and this is the first I recall hearing of this. Anecdotally - My mouth is great. My teeth are straight and I never had braces. I was bottle fed. My kids were both breastfed. Let's see how theirs fare.

Interesting, I thought it was a weird claim but so far most people haven't even heard of it. Unusual
