Can't blame journalists here. This isn't news. And yet, this from the press release Nowhere does it mention that a) most exposures were found to be fine or b) these relationships were not statistically significant anywaypic.twitter.com/ObLqvohQdy
Based on the results of the study itself, the press release should read "no relationship between exposure to industrial pollutants and autism found" but that's much less grabbing I guess ping @natalier78
Hi all. I did try to get in touch with the authors for clarification, unsuccessfully. Also, in the copy, I discuss the details of the relationships found in the study. It’s also worth noting that this study shows a (possibly interesting?) correlation, not a causation.
Hi Natalie! I mostly agreed with your copy further down, but I think even then it's a tough one to interpret - the statistical associations are very weak and after correction disappeared, so it might not even be showing a correlation either
I think the SMC does a good job of explaining here - there's just enough there to not completely rule out an association, warranting further research, but without bigger numbers it's impossible to know what's happening here https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/solvents-in-the-workplace-and-risk-of-autism-spectrum-disorders/ …
