We don't have any analytical methods which can reliably eliminate bias in this sort of study. And they didn't control for smoking, so we know the results are biased by design. The consistent direction of effect may justify more research but it can't be used for special pleading.

Meh I don't think it really justifies more research per se. I demonstrated today that marriage was a significant risk factor for diabetes as opposed to divorce, separation, never marriage, or being widowed. Consistent negative effect until I controlled properly for confounding

You can't control properly for confounding: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14499048/ … That study looks at interventions so that they can construct non-randomised studies from randomised data to nail the comparison, but the same problems apply to observational data.

That's not what that paper shows and is incorrect. You can indeed control properly for confounding, although it is obviously a complex issue

It's not a paper, it's a monograph. And if you've read it you will be able to explain what you mean instead of just waving your hands around insisting that you know what magic to sprinkle on a single observational study that allows you to draw causal conclusions.pic.twitter.com/r7ERhmtGJj

I never said that and don't deal with straw men. Nomenclature of scientific papers aside, you're saying nonsense to get a rise. Have fun and goodbye
