#3. The study isn’t studying horns. A bone spur is not a horn. A bone spur is not a horn. A bone spur is not a horn. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/smartphones-arent-making-millennials-grow-horns-heres-how-to-spot-a-bad-study …pic.twitter.com/HqikvtLj8P

More on that... If you tried to feel for your "horn" over the weekend and couldn't find one, bioarchaeologist @sarakbecker can explain why: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/smartphones-arent-making-millennials-grow-horns-heres-how-to-spot-a-bad-study …pic.twitter.com/FNB1AyOr7U

#4. If these bone spurs are happening, where are the X-rays? As paleoanthropologist @johnhawks told us and also columned, the researchers “haven’t provided the data to back up their claim.” Those scans are important because... https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/smartphones-arent-making-millennials-grow-horns-heres-how-to-spot-a-bad-study …pic.twitter.com/YKZa5Jmv9Z

...but also because bone spurs are common, can happen at any age and appear to be reversible, as Nivien Speith of @DerbyUni highlights: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/smartphones-arent-making-millennials-grow-horns-heres-how-to-spot-a-bad-study …pic.twitter.com/VUZqCzjsZG

Ok, almost done.... #5. The study claims males have more of these bone spurs, but doesn’t back it up. Look at this figure. Can you see a clear pattern with males or young males? https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/smartphones-arent-making-millennials-grow-horns-heres-how-to-spot-a-bad-study …pic.twitter.com/wFUMgpDGf0

Lol, just noticed fig. 4 is pointing at young females, though paper keeps saying young males got it bad. But then fig. 3 and written content say old people got it bad. Hmmm what do I do with this 🤔

Yet the study claims “sex was the primary predictor with males being 5.48 times more likely to have [neck bone spurs] than females.” When I asked one of the authors, David Shahar, about the discrepancy, he replied: https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/smartphones-arent-making-millennials-grow-horns-heres-how-to-spot-a-bad-study …pic.twitter.com/BnVnYbjVXM

Their sampling methodology also seemed very problematic to me. It appears that they went back through their clinical records system by appointment date until they got the numbers they were looking for 🤔

Also, there were a few minor errors as well, for example labeling the group 18-29yo in one place and 18-30 in another

Thanks! I went by @jamesheathers advice that if there is one error - especially as big an error as the graph entirely contradicting the logistic model - there are probably more

I use so much Australian/crossover slang in the achievement of these tasks that my normal language is affected. I'm not sure if it'd help.
