Yes apologies had the wrong figure. Most smokers have abnormal lung function, with 20-25% COPD. Regardless, there is significant morbidity associated with smoking as well

I tell you why my interest. Both parents died early. Father 52, mother 65. Both had stomach ulcers. As did I. Father one time smoker, quit late 30s, mother smoker. They were told cosntantly problems were lifestyle - coffee tea alcohol meat whatever. Crap. Helicobacter killed them

So for eg my doctor in 2002 ish refused to give me anti biotic - he said I had to quit meat and smoking and alcohol. I said those things do not cause stomach ulcers. He was younger than me and health conscious. He's now dead btw. Whole prevention thing is masking treatable causes
