RR’s (and OR’s, and HR’s...) clearly have a critical place in research. I just think knowing both “absolute” and “relative” are important, and too often only one of them appears.
To me that's the key - risk ratios are incredibly important for research. For communication, I think absolute risks are often much easier to understand, especially to the lay public
The ibuprofen/heart attack link springs to mind. Ibuprofen causes a relative risk increase of ~35% in heart attacks, but whether that's important to you depends entirely on your baseline risk. For most people, it's low enough that the absolute risk increase is tiny
