Here's my red hot take - all of the above But who is ACCOUNTABLE for it? That's the harder question. At present, nobodyhttps://twitter.com/sciencesarah/status/1133148092646154240 …

Good question indeed. There would be plenty of egs of slightly hyped outcomes meaning more grants, higher profile. And others egs of quality, true outcomes explained well through good comms. So how to regulate? Even more emphasis on quality peer review? Don’t know

Are engagement metrics now part of academic research impact assessment? The more hype, the more profile, the more "impact"....

I wonder if there's an appropriate body that could draft voluntary guidelines on the reporting of medical research discoveries? Like a "code of conduct" for publishing press releases?

I wonder if any news outlets have similar guidelines, like must link to original research paper, must clearly state the stage of research finding (invitro, in vivo, pre-clinical, clinical etc.), must declare all sponsors/collaborators

That's why I'm more and more focused on press releases. The difference a good press release can make, in my opinion, is huge in terms of the tabloids

Absolutely. I think there's a huge responsibility on the media relations teams at academic research institutes to provide appropriate scope and context.
