I mean, I complain about headlines, but when you've got 2 studies, months apart, appearing to say the exact opposite thing what are lay people meant to think?

Epidemiologically, it's plausible that these two studies are not contradicting each other More likely, it is down to the statistical models each study used Either way pretty complex

As a Lay person, I would read that as a slight increase in CVD and/or a slight increase in longevity. The two do not contradict each other, they are from two studies looking for different effects.

Indeed. One appreared to be looking at CVD alone and the other death from anything. So you could read it that you might be at slightly higher risk of a heart problem but could live longer overall.
