It's also just really easy to vote here. Postal, online for overseas citizens, weeks of pre-polling, all voting is done on the weekend and polls are open both early and late

I was honestly shocked when I learned that voting in the US is done on Tuesdays. Great way to completely ruin any chance of a democratic election

In the UK elections are always held on Thursdays, but that’s not commonly criticised. Polling stations are open from 7am to 10pm so plenty opportunity to vote when not at work.

As an epidemiologist I'd argue that's a significant disincentive that will absolutely impact the cohort of voters. Likely a bias against disadvantaged groups, younger people, and shift workers

Re shift workers, surely the opposite is true? They have a much higher chance of being at work at the weekend than “9-5” workers, so weekday voting should equalise propensity to vote between shift and non-shift workers, no?

TBH they are generally disadvantaged regardless of the specific day, to get shift workers pre-polls and postal voting are more important imo
