Things that both journalists and scientists want: Accuracy. Perhaps a way forward in the debate over whether scientists can fact check articles before they're published: Have this discussion before interview. Be explicit about any potential areas for misconception. What else?

Recognising that much of the hype is already present in the press release written by uni/institute comms, I would say that more scientist fact-checking should happen there for sure.

I'm well aware. When research has been done on innacurate reporting, the press release is found to be the source more often than the journo. You can and should attract attention with news values without doing this.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
As someone who regularly critiques misleading reporting, I think that press releases are the most important part of the process for sure. The difference between the stories written from a good or bad press release in most papers is stark
