The paralysis did not last, in fact it was over in less then 5 minutes, my face could move and I could talk again when the paramedics arrived. I still did not feel right, my BP was a little low and I was really pale, I got my 1st ever ride in an ambulance, on the way I got an IV

They also had to shave little patches in my chest hair to put on the EKG patched, as far as I could tell the rhythm seemed fine, but I was on the way to the nearest hospital with a stroke ICU, fortunately there was one very close in Lengerich

When I got to the ER they did a neuro exam (which was fine) and asked a history and took a blood sample and I went in for a head CT. The head CT didn't seem to show anything (abnormal that is) so I was sent for an MRI (MRT in Germany)

The MRI I was told was also fine (normal) as far as they could see no stroke (yay!). But I was still in the Stroke ICU, and they had these signs on the wall at the end of the bed that said "You are in the Stroke/ICU" I thought about all the people who come to and read these signs

I (36 well except
#T1D) was not a usual patient for this unit. As I was looking at the sign I noticed a flicker in my left eye. I get migraines that start with all of my vision blurring, which goes away and then a headache starts, just my luck I was also getting a migraine today1 reply 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread -
I told the physician who came in next that I was getting a migraine and the look of relief on her face was immediate. Likely because I was giving my history in German and I was pretty freaked out, I didn't mention migraines before, turns out that was a key detail

I'd never heard of a Hemiplegic Migraine, a rare subtype of migraine that can include weakness in half the body and ataxia, but it was now top on the list of likely causes for my symptomshttps://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemiplegic_migraine …

The physician said based on the CT and MRI and my history of migraines it is likely I had a Hemiplegic one, but she wanted to rule out any potential bloodflow issue in my neck first, so I got a carotid ultrasound. My carotids were good (sigh of relief) so the diagnosis was set

I guess it was the luckiest possible outcome, but the diagnosis isn't for sure, just most likely. It could be something else and that really messed me up for a bit. It was intense to have my body betray me like that and have that flash of mortality.

TL;DR I thought I had a stroke, turns out it was a rare subtype of migraine, I now have a DVD of my head CT and MRI.
