In Stata, use stsplit. The syntax is a bit of a nightmare - the key is working out the start, split, censored and end dates.

Ah I see. I guess it depends how much information on all of the rows you need to collapse and how much granularity you're willing to lose? I've done something similar with hospital attendances but I could afford to lose a fair bit of data to answer my question
