This is based on actually quite a small study on people in Sweden which, predictably, did not show that drinking reduced the risk of depressionpic.twitter.com/hAQ42k8Vvy
If nothing else, the absolute risk increase in people who didn't drink at all was 1.6% for depression, which considering that they were also more likely to be in financial distress, uneducated, and have dependents than moderate drinkers ISN'T SURPRISING AT ALL
Also, there's an obvious issue of reverse causality - people with depression are more likely to have quit drinking which means that you literally can't say anything about this finding other than "there was a correlation"
Growing up with a parent who was an alcoholic, all I can say is that my father would have used this article to justify his drinking of 2+ pints of beer a day and there would have been no way to undo the damage of false reporting like this.
