"Gosh, I wonder who's saying that breast milk is a panacea for human health?" ... "Oh look, it's Abbott, no chance they'd have a vested interest I'm sure it's going to revolutionize medicine!"pic.twitter.com/fcxE4550Ti

Also, if we're being technical here, the proposed supplement is a range of artificially-produced compounds derived from human-milk oligosaccharides it's not like people are going to be drinking from the teat
Also, love that it's all about pro/prebiotics because there's already tons of evidence that we have idiosyncratic gut microbiomes and any supplement like this is unlikely to be effective so that's nicepic.twitter.com/DcUunqbSew
The best analogy I've seen so far is that our gut is like a forest, complex and diverse, and probiotics are a single species that we are air-dropping in. Might be nice to have more hummingbirds, but it's not necessarily going to make the forest healthier
And on the whole Abbott thing...look, companies are going to spruik their products It's inevitable But if the only voice you present is the one making money from the product...well, not great journalism there I'd say
So, had a quick look at the research on human milk oligosaccharides and wow does it get even better
There are two studies directly comparing HMO supplementation to a control One was in newborn infants BOTH FOUND NO BENEFICIAL EFFECTpic.twitter.com/oTEDLddPzQ
Now, to be fair to these trials, they were mostly looking at safety rather than benefit But still, current best evidence is that HMOs probably don't do very much
No idea. Sounds plausible, but I don't remember it sadly
