I always have trouble when this argument comes up On the one hand, more empathy is always good On the other, it assumes that we haven't tried that alreadyhttps://twitter.com/bkjabour/status/1113917508665221120 …

I'm all for being understanding, and giving people a chance As
@timminchin said recently, we should all be a little less shit to each other onlineShow this thread -
But I struggle with the idea that what's lacking is that we just need to understand people who spread some truly awful stuff I'm not sure more empathy is necessarily going to help

I'm also not sure I agree that we aren't empathetic now. Most people are empathetic most of the time. Hard to be perfect, of course

This is the crux of the problem tho — being unable to empathize with people who Do Bad Things. I’m not a fan of Nazis either, but if you can’t find the common humanity among another person, there’s no way you can speak to them emphatically and with compassion.

It doesn’t mean agreeing with their views, but being open to what they are saying without prejudice, to understand where they’re coming from — what are they afraid of? How does that influence their beliefs and actions, etc.? It’s just as much about humanity as it is evidence.
