But instead, when we look at the evidence, we find... Exactly the opposite Industry funded trials mostly report positive results for the funding bodypic.twitter.com/nblpNjJ564

(I'll give you a hint - the industry is definitely not always right)

A few people have answered, so let's put the cards on the table That's right, it's publication bias!

If we look at industry funded trials, they are almost never negative (i.e. no benefit for the funding body) It turns out that often, the negative trials just aren't published!

Sources? It's a claim I've seen now and then, but I know I've seen criticism. Sounds uncharacteristically unprofessional... Isn't a main reason for reviews finding more null results in academic trials just a higher freq of more experimental interventions? @statsguyuk ?

I don't believe there are any good sources for that claim. It's true that in the past, negative trials were less likely to be published than positive ones, but that cuts across all sectors. Applied to industry and academia alike.

But recently, disclosure rates have increased substantially, and it's not at all clear that selective publication is still the problem that it once was. Disclosure rates are now higher for industry than for academia.

The two systematic reviews I referred to in the thread did both find this but it's true that they were not very recent (2004 and 2013). Would be interesting to see an updated piece of research

Found what exactly? That negative trials less likely to be published, or that there was a difference between industry and others in the extent of publication bias?

That industry trials were significantly more likely to be positive (in one case by a wide margin) than non-industry

But not providing evidence that publication bias is the reason for that?

I think one review did look at publication bias as well but it wasn't one of the ones in the thread. I'll see if I can find it
