Lawyers I need your help. Surely this is total nonsense? If a jury has decided that the evidence shows that Pell committed the offence, how can that form the basis of an appeal? #cardinalpellpic.twitter.com/h8ANahl9ez

Not a lawyer either but the crux of it is that it’s rather unusual to convict someone of a serious crime based solely on the testimony of the complainant, for obvious reasons. No doubt Richter will argue that the jury came to its conclusions based on extrinsic evidence.

It’s obviously difficult for any of us to comment as we haven’t heard the testimony, only parts of it, and it’s clear that it must have been very compelling for a jury to accept it.

True. Also, I don't think he was convicted on the basis of a single testimony? a single eye-witness, sure, but that's not uncommon. There were more than a dozen witnesses who testified, so I feel like it's a bit of a stretch

There were no corroborating accounts, forensic evidence or patterns of behaviour admitted to evidence. For obvious reasons, but still highly unusual to gain a conviction without them.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/beyond-reasonable-doubt-was-pell-convicted-without-fear-and-favour-20190227-p510j0.html … https://theconversation.com/how-an-appeal-could-uphold-or-overturn-george-pells-conviction-112620 … Two interesting perspectives. FWIW I think Pell is a bad man who has done evil things but that does not mean this verdict is safe.

See, I have a problem with all of these articles because they're saying that "no one else has accused Pell! This was totally out of character!" but that's total nonsense. He was on trial for similar offences, and there are accusations dating back decades

I know that, and you know that, and the man on the street knows that, but *none of these accusations were evidence at the trial*. From a legal perspective, then, none of those other allegations can be used to determine guilt for these offences.

It's fundamental to our legal system that people can only be convicted or acquitted based on evidence presented at a fair trial. Again, I stress, I believe the victims and believe Pell is an evil person, but that is not a sufficient standard of proof for our justice system.
