Genuinely- what’s incorrect? Testosterone does elevate performance, doesn’t it?

It depends. Current best evidence shows that endogenous testosterone - I.e. your own body's production - does not confer a competitive advantage

Could I ask you for sources on that? I'm curious.

Not sure that works for me. Went and did some digging, and a basic Google scholar search turns up with paper after paper indicating the presence of a rather clear correlation. Might be I'm just not good at searching.

Ah no okay I might've misunderstood the point under contention here. Testosterone is (generally) higher in men, but it's not possible to draw a clear line between the two groups and it varies a lot depending on exercise. Am I understanding that correctly?

At least, that seems to be the point made in this paper: http://science.sciencemag.org/content/348/6237/858.full …

Basically, it's incredibly complex, the cause/effect relationship is hard to establish, and it's likely that environmental factors are more important anyway

Whole chapter on complexity of T and athleticism relationship in forthcoming book as well as T and aggression, risk-taking, parenting, reproduction and more. I'll cut to the punchline: there is a whole heap of T folklore that needs undoing.
