Study is here, it's a combination of a hypothetical model for gut bacteria to cause depression and a bunch of regression models looking at predicting depression with gut bacteriahttps://www.nature.com/articles/s41564-018-0337-x …

Now, I'm not going to go into too much detail about the proposed mechanism here. It's very complex and honestly not that interesting unless you're really into microbial decomposition of hormonespic.twitter.com/wDhzHGJzt6

But basically, the scientists here produced some models about what impact gut bacteria might have on depression, quality of life, and depressive symptoms

They found - in a SUBSET of the 1,000 people reported everywhere - that people who had a specific ratio of certain bacteria in their gut were a little bit more likely to get depressedpic.twitter.com/KrIXZQmPiA

They then did some interesting work looking at gut bacteria samples and relating them to various biological processes to see if they could develop a hypothetical model of how these gut bacteria might be causing depressionpic.twitter.com/2ZWGCLZsO4

If that seems like an enormously complex and finicky hypothesis, that's because it really is This is all very speculative science because as I said it's preliminarypic.twitter.com/68AOeF25Jv

What does this all mean? Honestly, not all that much

Firstly THIS WAS NOT ABOUT BACTERIA CAUSING DEPRESSION The authors even said this IN THE GODDAM PAPERpic.twitter.com/pVy0O0cfWO

Secondly, it's really hard to know what to make of the models. Do small differences in depression between different enterotypes of gut bacteria mean very much? Maybe? Maybe not?

And lastly, this study literally did not examine diet at all. It just looked at bacteria and depression Any dietary interventions are far, far away

Bacteria may be involved in depression - we just aren't sure. All we can tell right now is that it's a very complex interrelationship that will take some time to untangle
