Myth: abortion is always/usually surgical Fact: most abortions are medical - while surgical procedures are often presented as the face of abortion by critics, these are in the minority in most places 4/pic.twitter.com/inqGTfmxa3

(Note - the above varies by location. Medical abortion is not always available, but when it is it is usually the preferred method) 5/

Myth: abortion involves scalpels, scissors, burning and torture Fact: surgical abortion can involve the use of cutting implements, but most abortions are medical and merely involve blocking hormones that continue the pregnancy 6/pic.twitter.com/AWwdV2RYnh

Myth: abortion has serious long-term health impacts Fact: there is no good evidence that abortion is unhealthy, unlike pregnancy which is a leading cause of death for women of childbearing age 7/pic.twitter.com/7AIxFU2lWt

Myth: late-term (post 21-24 week) abortions are common Fact: late-term abortions are extremely rare (and getting less common!), and almost exclusively in cases where the fetus is dying/already dead or the mother's life is in imminent danger 8/pic.twitter.com/qTMNnDKEhz

This is a thread of facts. These statements are all very well-supported by data and aren't really there for debate You can argue about opinions, but you can't argue facts 9/

There are many areas of the abortion debate that are entangled with complex ethical and moral questions, like "what constitutes a person?" I'm not here to litigate those disputes 10/

The fact is that many arguments about abortion rely on misconceptions, and it is unfortunate that so many people buy into these simply because they play into a narrative that supports their point 11/11

P.s. One very important fact I missed out Myth: restrictive abortion laws (i.e. banning abortions) reduces the rate of abortion Fact: while the evidence isn't overwhelming, what research has been done indicates that banning abortions has no impact on the rate of abortion

So you're saying women continue to get abortions even if it's illegal?? That must be terribly dangerous. Put her life at risk. Surely pro-lifers wouldn't want that...
