If you say that p=0.08 is a trend towards significance, you should say that 0.01<p<0.05 is a trend towards insignificance, which would include most of the results in this study

Also, if you are going to report something as your primary measure, it should be first in your results section even if the finding was negative

They're saying that there was a trend towards a significant result because the p-value was *almost* significant, which is a bit like saying that you *almost* got pregnant or *almost* won the lottery

Not really. It's a fairly common trope, people reporting their results as trending towards significance, even though that's a meaningless statement
