Even inside those groupings (talc users versus non-talk users) there were many other factors that mattered; whether the women were on hormonal replacement therapy, whether they were over-weight, many other known risk factors for cancers. But there's a bigger problem.. (9/n)pic.twitter.com/yOrNYagbj1

The huge issue is that these were case-control studies. Essentially, self reported data. This is the weakest possible evidence, because human recall is pretty bloody flawed. With better study design, the talc-cancer link seems to disappear (10/n) https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/evidence-on-talc-cancer-risk-differs-for-jurors-researchers/ …pic.twitter.com/oGJZenLSo8

For this reason, most cancer organisations do not believe that talc to the genitals is particularly risky. Here's the American cancer society on it, for example: (11/n) https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-causes/talcum-powder-and-cancer.html …pic.twitter.com/2P4lEgd3Gb

Should people be worried? I wouldn't be. If there is risk it's miniscule in comparison to known risks. Also, like all risks, dose matters - precisely how much talc are you going to use?! If you are worried, no harm is decreasing your exposure, but also likely no need (12/n)pic.twitter.com/8jtmaGKgJ4

Also, correlation is not causation - this cannot be repeated enough. Ice cream sales are correlated with drowning, but they don't cause it! Their appparent relationship is consequence of a lurking variable - good weather. Basic lab science required to prove X causes Y! (13/n)pic.twitter.com/51NHKUpR4r

Finally, you might ask why juries award such massive pay outs when the evidence base is so weak? I'd suggest standards evidence on court << scientific evidence. I direct you to my previous musings on the subject (14/14)https://twitter.com/drg1985/status/1028239030515916800 …

In the last year, courts have ruled that 1) Round-up causes cancer 2) Talc causes cancer 3) Wi-Fi causes cancer 4) Vaccines cause SIDs All of which are completely bloody wrong, clashing entirely with scientific data. The law is an ass - especially when it comes to science.

Great thread and I agree with all the science. But you can’t over up testing results.

I think I also reacted strongly to the initial news because ovarian cancer is one thing but mesothelioma doesn't have a strict biological gradient and has no known safe threshold, so any exposure is a big issue
