What mechanism would cause the increase in deaths?
-
Inappropriate testing and treatment based on false positive results. While AF testing is comparably benign, given the sheer number of people with Apple Watches it's likely that many will be inappropriately diagnosed/treated while very few will be picked up with AF

If you are relying on a watch for comprehensive healthcare, that’s dumb. I just want to know how far I’ve walked and how many steps I need to get in.

Well i truly hope the tech has improved on previous models that frequently told me my heart rate was in the 20s...... it wasn’t!

According to my friend
@jamesheathers the tech is much better (although depending on brand, still not great), but even so I reckon the bigger danger is false positives due to the low population prevalence of AF - Show replies

The whole false positive rate in rare conditions is poorly understood. I may steal this as an example for my students.

Do it! I think the Apple Watch example is a really good one because everyone can relate
