This is something I've been going back and forth over for a long time - there are literally millions of diet tips out there, and most of them are crap What to do in the face of all this?

My answer is always to go back to the evidence. And the evidence strongly suggests, over and over again, the the best diet is no diet

That is, if you look at systematic reviews on every diet imaginable, you'll find that in general no diet works better than any other

Low-carb doesn't outperform low-fat. Paleo doesn't do better than IF. Vegans are healthier, but no more so than meat-loving keto subscribers

So what is my advice? Well, firstly, don't listen to anyone on the internet, even me. I can't give you personalized dietary advice, because I don't know nearly enough about you

The same is true for all of these diet gurus. Vegan diets are incredibly hard where I work, because vegan food is more expensive and requires more cooking time

Similarly, very few of our patients can even attempt keto. When someone eats mostly ready-meals or MacDonalds, it's laughable to suggest that you can ask them to take enormous amounts of time/money to start preparing virtually all of their meals from scratch!

And personally, as a Fat Guy, I lost a bunch of weight doing low-carb, gained it back, then lost it again on a low-fat diet And as ever, my anecdote means virtually nothing because you are not me

What's my advice? Well, for that you should read the blog But, what we can easily say is that there is no one answer to any diet questions

It's not going to be reducing fat, it's not going to be reducing carbs, it's not going to be any one thing There are no panaceas

We all want a simple answer, but if there's anything the evidence shows us, it's that there are no easy answers Maybe that's sad, but maybe that's also liberatingpic.twitter.com/KJTcLxBOLN

Would you agree that far too much focus is placed on content of diet rather than simply total calories consumed (or caloric balance)?

Yes and no. I think most people will lose weight if they restrict calories. I also think that individuals want to know what foods to eat, and the advice to just eat less is a bit meaningless, so our fixation on specific foods makes perfect sense
