Replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners in soft drinks likely reduces body weight A systematic review and meta-analysis found a modest but clinically and statistically important weight loss in RCTs comparing artificial sweeteners with either soft drinks or waterpic.twitter.com/k8kAuKNPWC

The study found no difference in observational studies of artificial sweetener intake. Due to reverse causality, it's hard to know if that's meaningful, but it at least indicates that artificial sweeteners aren't making people gain weightpic.twitter.com/4ZssqYOODT

There is some fairly large heterogeneity between the RCTs, so hard to take the results at face value, but there does appear to be good support for replacing soft drinks with diet versions as part of a weight loss regime

This study was done in 2015. Another systematic review published the year before found the same thing - artificial sweeteners cause a very small but significant drop in body weighthttps://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/100/3/765/4576435 …

I can concur. Not only has it help my weight, my teeth are FAR better than they ever have been. It's such a shame the lunatic fringe led by people like @mercola are intent on giving all (but stevia, naturally) a bad name, associating them with obesity and cancer!

Do you ever step back and look in the mirror when you use phrases like "lunatic fringe"?. Don't worry, I'm not "stalking you", I found your nonsense through @GidMK

Maybe not gaining weight, how about overall health? Probably not part of the study funded by groups not wanting to see those results? Why are soft drinks (with or without artificial sweeteners) part of ANY diet?

Not sure how you're defining "overall health", but no evidence artificial sweeteners cause: 1. Cancer 2. Diabetes 3. Gut issues 4. Metabolic dysfunction Funding of the studies is rarely from industry, it's mostly government
