There seems to be a slight shift in the AIS messaging on protein supplements for athletes. It has gone from ‘there is little scientific justification’ to ‘they certainly aren’t essential for everyone’. However I am yet to find any performance-based evidence to support the change.

All of the evidence I have seen so far is either too low-quality to make a recommendation either way, or negative. TBH, most of it falls into the first category, so I'm not sure how you could support the message regardless!

I think the evidence is a little better than you’d think. The paper most people refer to nowadays is Morton et al. (2016)

I actually hadn't seen that one, thanks! Honestly, I think that study kind of shows what I meant. Very minor benefit estimate based on a large number of studies each with a tiny sample size, and massive heterogeneity across studies
