Study is here, and it is...complex. Rodent studies usually are http://embor.embopress.org/content/19/12/e44706 …pic.twitter.com/azL7sa4QEG
Basically, the researchers took some genetically manipulated mice and normal mice, and fed them both a bunch of fat The genetically manipulated mice gained much less weight than the normal ones
How were the mice genetically manipulated, you ask? Years of selective breeding
So firstly, this isn't likely to be a direct treatment in humans, unless we start up our eugenics programs again
Secondly, this is a rodent study, of which about 8% ever make it to clinical trials/treatments in humans
It's not a pill, and it's not in humans, which to me indicates that it will be YEARS or even DECADES before this is a useful treatment This is not surprising OBESITY IS A DIFFICULT PROBLEM
There are dozens of promising obesity pills in development right now. There are dozens that have been licensed. The problem is that they all have nasty side-effects and no one wants to take them
Methamphetamines used to be prescribed for weight loss, for example
The likelihood that this, or any other drug for obesity, is going to solve our problems is low
I loved taking phentermine. No appetite. Dropped 40 pounds. House was spotless. The heart palpitations put an end to that dream.
