So there's an article on page 3. of @theage about Pregablin and even reporting on this stuff is problematic. What are doctors going to use to treat peripheral neuropathy if it's not in the toolkit?

Without it, I’d literally be screaming for half of my day. Nerve pain is not something I’m able to cope with, it’s excruciating. This keeps it to a dull roar. Is it good for everyone? No. Does that mean it shouldn’t be an option for anyone? No!pic.twitter.com/q61VlD34wR

I think the article outlines the pros and cons quite well personally. The main issue seems to be that pregabalin is important for some as a source of pain relief but is currently not sufficiently well-controlled which opens up the potential for abuse

How is it not well controlled? It’s a prescription only medication that your pharmacist will question if you refill too early. What other controls can be put in place that do not limit access for those that really need the drug?

Lyrica is prescription-only, schedule 4. Most ppl have to be seeing a specialist to get that prescription. Don't know of any GPs/ER docs prescribing it. I think the real issue is oversight over refills, and this goes for many drugs

If someone is refilling scripts weeks early, the question should be are they using more than prescribed. Most overdoses happen when mixing with other CNS depressants: TAG should be asking why patients were prescribed benzodiazepines/opiates while also prescribed Pregablin

Ask why the wait for pain management is 6 months. This is a systemic problem in chronic health management - it's not about one single med. If someone has untreated peripheral neuropathy, then often nobody is helping them learn mechanisms for long-term pain control & medication

Mmm but I don't think anyone's suggesting taking pregabalin out of the toolkit entirely? The main call seems to be upregulating it either to S8 or to set up a register to monitor and track adverse events, both of those seem reasonable responses imo
