This is where it gets really interesting. Smoking, for example - is it a determinant or a health status that is itself determined?

To my mind, smoking is a personal responsibility

Or maybe it's coping mechanism that makes chaos or trauma or terrible personal circumstances easier to live with

Yes but still a choice as opposed to where you were born, going to good school, what your parents earn. Lots of factors influencing why someone smokes but still a choice to doing it. Noone in Ireland can claim they don’t know impact at least. Globally diffferent perhaps

Bit of a sweeping statement to make. I'm sure there are lots of people who don't fully understand the impact of smoking on their health. And as for the "choice"people have.. well perhaps some insights from psychology colleagues would be interesting!

It's also difficult because the whole idea of #SDoH is that it is about things that you don't have a choice in. With smoking, if your parents smoke, your risk of smoking is magnified enormously - is that a choice or something else? #irishmed

Mirroring behaviour from primary caregivers is instructive 're what are social and cultural norms. Children are not objective observers.
