In fact, scientifically, sex is a bimodal distribution that we have arbitrarily designated into 2 categories. This thread explainshttps://twitter.com/ScienceVet2/status/1035246030500061184 …

So. Hi new people! Apparently, we're gonna talk about sex. Like physical sex! Because... there's some confusion. First, sex defined: We're talking physical sex here, not gender. Body parts, hormones, and genetics (and more). BLUF: BIOLOGICAL sex is a spectrum 1/

I disagree. Of course there are chromosomal abnormalities, wild hormonal variations and other factors but ultimately, like with all mammals, & as a result of evolution, there are 2 sexes with distinct physiological and behavioural differences, essentially for reproductive reasons

That's fairly well covered in the thread. Virtually all sex differences exist on a spectrum, including biological and hormonal ones. There's no place you can point to with any accuracy to separate men from women, hence the bimodal distribution

Again, I disagree. For the vast majority of people, they are clearly either male or female with chromosomes and physiology in common. And of course there is diversity within each group but they are still quite easily definable as one sex or another. Evolution has determined this

You can't just say "evolution has determined this", it's not really a cogent argument. Evolution has also determined that sea slugs mate in a hermaphrodidic chain because they are all male and female simultaneously As to the rest, I advise you to read the thread above^^

That guy's thread is trying to bring PC to the science & it shouldn’t. There are vast variations within each sex but there are still just 2 sexes. Your slug example is an outlier for the most part. It’s disingenuous to suggest otherwise as the evidence is clear throughout nature

It's literally a thread of facts about hormonal variation within "sexes" in humans. Calling it "bringing PC to the science" is disingenuous posturing

He’s trying to make out that sex is some kind of spectrum and that is the disingenous part. And I think he’s doing that because that’s idealistically how things 'should' be for ultimate inclusivity. But that’s simply not supported by the science.

The thread is literally a description of science. As I said, you are being disingenuous, in a particularly tedious manner

We're going to have to agree to disagree I guess. He’s an endocrinologist which is narrow in its field and his observations are certainly interesting. But applying his area onto all of biology (genetics, behaviour, evolution) does not match up.

He's not an endocrinologist, nor a medical doctor. He's a biological scientist specializing in endocrinology

I think you’re arguing for arguing's sake now. I’ve followed you for some time and you’re petty much on the money with a lot of what you say. But I’m confused at your take on this. Do you actually and honestly think that biological sex (in humans or other mammals) is a spectrum?

I think that the evidence points that way for most variables (hormonal, physical, internal etc) that we could pick out. It becomes very difficult to separate sexes when you actually decide to try and pick them apart scientifically
