Classic case of erroneously inferring the converse. That starvation induces ketosis does not imply that ketosis indicates starvation any more than all cats are mammals implies all mammals are cats. Ketosis is foremost a brain growth state.https://twitter.com/Drgarthdavis/status/1063060809125978112 …

What?!?!?! LOL. You mean like we were mainly in starvation so were ketotic? Twitter world loves to speculate but anthropologists say we ate lots of fiber and carbs. We also didn’t stop evolving after paleo. Read “Paleofantasy” by Marlene Zuk , a real anthropologist

1/ I just gave a talk on this. Major points: *Ketones are known fuel and structural material in fetal/infant brain in mammals *No known species is as ketogenic as humans, and children more than adults (concordance with human high adipose, esp babies, and with relative brain size)pic.twitter.com/dVoWTmJd4f

2/ Ketosis would be expected with diet available during period of evolution of the brain, especially considering what must have been consumed in order to meet the combination of required nutrients for brain growth (Second slide addressing only energy+phospholipid needs)pic.twitter.com/Xd3CawabxH

3/ I.e. Ketosis characterises periods of brain growth especially in humans, and our large brains likely explain our unique tendency to ketosis without protein or calorie restriction.

Thanks! I'm not sure I agree that supports the idea of "primarily a brain growth state", but definitely interesting information

For rats to go into ketosis takes an unusually restricted diet, because brain size determines the evolutionary requirement for ketosis. Humans need at least 20% of energy as glucose or ketones for brain, rats it's more like 2%. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0896627315002597 …

(Not the paper, which I've never seen before, just the species differences wrt brain energetic requirements.)
