People need to stop saying "[x] is the new smoking" Smoking is a specific risk factor that BY ITSELF increases your risk of cancer/death by 3000%+ Unless the risk you're talking about is comparable, it's not the "new smoking"

Sitting all day raises your risk of death by a bit. Eating fast food for every meal a bit more None of these individually are as problematic as smoking was and still is in some places (70%+ smoking rates in Indonesian men!)

The things that are comparable with smoking are mostly old hat. Asbestos. Seat belts. Leaded petrol Most of the other truly gobsmacking environmental risks are known and controlled (at least in wealthy areas)

Most modern issues - like obesity - are made up of numerous risk factors that are themselves comprised of hundreds of different behaviours If you can stop someone smoking, you drop their risk of death enormously. This is not true of sitting

To be like smoking, a risk has to be both a) very high b) EASILY PREVENTABLE If you can't reduce the risk with a single behavioural change, it's not much like smoking at all

Smoking joints is the new smoking. Most are smoked to the tarry tip. Added similarity that it misuses and grossly overstates the minor medicinal benefits, a common occurrence with tobacco up until the 1960s. At least tobacco lobbyists never had the gall to claim to cure cancer.
