Statistical ignoramus here, and probably off-topic. I'd thought something was either significant (eg p<0.05) or not. And that one shouldn't think that p=0.001 is "more significant" than p=0.049. Did I pick this up wrongly?

It is a bit more complex than that. In this case, given the small sample size, small difference between groups, and multiple comparisons, I would be far more wary in drawing definitive conclusions
