There are similar findings in the general population - a lot of people think that sugar causes hyperactivity!
The problem is, this is a question that we have actually tested. Hyperactivity is associated with ADHD, so anything that might cause and/or exacerbate the condition is really interesting
The results were surprising, to say the least. A number of studies have now shown that eating lots of sugar does not make kids more hyperactive
Instead, environmental and social cues are likely to blame. Put a child in a room full of other kids who are going nuts, and you'll probably see them running around yelling as well
But the evidence is pretty clear: sugar, by itself, doesn't cause hyperactivity in children It definitely doesn't cause ADHD If you want to know more, read the blog!
Note: "sugar does not cause hyperactivity" is VERY different from "candy is a healthy option" Eat candy rarely, it is calorie-dense and nutritionally-poor
Interesting thank you. Does hyperactive have a specific definition in this context? Does sweets/sugar increase blood glucose/available energy source? If so is it down to the child how they use that energy?
The studies have examined two main questions: a) does sugar increase hyperactive behaviour as reported by parents/teachers and b) does sugar increase the risk of ADHD So far, both answers are negative
But there are a lot of colourings, caffeine from chocolate, flavourings etc in lollies.
