I hate it when people say "BMI is inaccurate, it's useless!" No BMI is IMPERFECT, not inaccurate It does not provide a perfect estimate of risk for every person BUT it is a good estimation for most people

Works for populations- not individuals, all of the time.

I don't agree that BMI should be used as a "quick and easy" assessment for eating disorder treatment. One can be in healthy range and still have an active eating disorder. One can be in the overweight range and still have an active eating disorder. It's all about the thoughts.

Edge cases like your example are commonly used to dismiss BMI outright.

But is it better than waist circumference?

A few people have asked that. Short answer: dunno. Long answer: dunno Both seem reasonably good at predicting risk, so either one I guess?

Well no. For individuals there are better measures. BMI is good for population based data because the average muscle mass/height etc is, well average, when you have a large data set. For individuals unless you are average the measure will always be inaccurate.

For an individual BMI is less accurate than just looking at the person. BMI is fantastic for large population sets. For individuals use a measure that is more accurate.

Unless you’re on the short side 5/8 or less and muscular, then it’s useless.
