My point of course is that you are doing apples to oranges. Unless I am mistaken, Australia does not have a large illegal immigrant population. Depending on what source you look at we have 10-30 million.

By percentage, I believe we have a very similar proportion - about 2.6% in Australia and 3.3% in the US so I'd say that's not a very cogent argument

      Not cogent? Uninformed perhaps.

And just a quick search gives me a 2017 estimate of 64000 in the country illegally. http://theconversation.com/what-its-like-to-live-and-work-illegally-in-australia-81478 …

Maybe that’s a bad source. But let’s call it 100000 for simplicity. 24 million citizens. I get 0.4 percent for Australia and 325 million US citizens w about 30 million illegals so just under 9 percent.

HA! I misplaced my decimal point, you are correct. What an idiotic mistake, my bad

No worries at all. Honest question follows. I had been under the impression that Australia had a “two-tiered” system. A universal coverage plan, but also a supplemental insurance option from the private side. Is this true?

Yep that's our system. Universal coverage is paid for using a 2% income tax that is tiered to income, and private is additional coverage, supporting a limited private hospital network

I think that’s an awesome system. I would advocate for that.

We also have strict legislation around providing private cover, meaning private insurers can't discriminate based on most factors in their prices. Works pretty well

Confused. If an insurance company can not charge higher rates based on known health risks or known diseases then it’s not insurance anymore. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding.

Nope, it's insurance, the prices are just standardized to create a risk pool, reducing the impact of adverse selection and various other biases
