I'm struggling to see this as anything other than total mischaracterization of the study itself for media attention. Would be fascinated to see if the authors can justify this
Also worth noting that this isn't necessarily an indictment of the authors - press releases can be misleading for a wide variety of reasons. That being said, those are two entirely contradictory statements

Oh yeh I've read the initial release. This is why it's hard to tell what's happened here: have the authors been misquoted, or is this some other kind of misunderstanding? Hard to know
When authors get bombarded by laypress journalists with emails asking for quotes/suggested lines I’m sure it’s hard to keep straight all they are approving. Easy for words to get put in their mouths if they aren’t careful with approvals
I would agree, but I'm not sure it applies in this case given that this is from the press release written by a PR firm. Would've come before all the press attention!
