I find two things really hard to write about: obesity and mental health This blog is about both We know obesity is bad for you. What to do about it? That's much harder What we do know is that shame DOES NOT WORKhttps://medium.com/@gidmk/obesity-is-bad-for-your-health-b21439caa543 …

Shame and stigma are horrible, pernicious things that do enormous harm. Obesity may be a problem, but shaming people just makes that problem work

Conversely, the evidence about obesity being bad for you is very, very clear. My BMI is 28: this has health implications When it was 35, those implications were that much worse

People should lose weight, if they have excess fat This does not make it ok to shame them, nor does it mean we can ignore the impacts of society on their health #SDoH #publichealth

How can one communicate that obesity is bad without shaming people who have it? Shame isn’t public ridicule. It’s people looking at you and knowing you represent their greatest fear. Of being invisible. No politeness hides that.

I think a lot of people desire to lose weight. Is there a need to communicate something about their weight? Perhaps, healthy nutrition education is better. One can put something they learned into action at their next meal. But they can't do much about weight - in the moment

What we also know (or the experts do) is that while at a cell level this "energy in vs out") physics obviously holds true, humans do not all absorb/process their energy intake equally.

The mistake, imho, starts with the thinking obesity is about nutrition education.

Why not chat about health instead of obesity?

Imo stress causes obesity and nobody seems to talk about that. Our society demands people to function around the clock with little possibilities to really ever relax. Many people eat to fight that stress which does not work of course resp. even adds more stress.

To eat is something good you can do to yourself fast and it is always available. It is not so easy to get away from stress caused by problems with work or family. We should focus more on why people eat than what and how much.
