*Incoherent Screaming* This is not true Researchers have discovered ~a plausible mechanism~ so far ~only tested in cells in petri dishes~pic.twitter.com/aRc7MPL7i9

The researchers from Griffith that this story is about are doing some fascinating work on their theory about the cause of CFS/ME, but at the moment IT IS STILL A THEORY
There are numerous similar theories that may or may not pan out Maybe CFS/ME is partly caused by calcium ion channel impairment Maybe it's down to the gut microbiome Maybe it's to do with previous viral infection WE DON'T REALLY KNOW THAT'S THE WHOLE PROBLEM
If we call every "plausible mechanism" a "major breakthrough", we are just selling false hope for a diagnostic technique that may never materialize
The big, wonderful discovery that this article talks about? The diagnostic test for CFS/ME? IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN DEVELOPED YETpic.twitter.com/j1tuSrWVyn
Also worth noting that this is hardly a "breakthrough", this same team has had a news article every 6 months for the last 2 years about their 'discoveries' May 2018:pic.twitter.com/PlnmLTri4L
And, all the way back in July 2014 (not on the exact same topic, but very similar):pic.twitter.com/ICdFmVUxIv
It's always worth being cautious in this space, because CFS/ME is filled with pseudoscientific nonsense This is not that, by any means, but it is still fairly preliminary theory that may or may not pan out
