It is, to be honest, fascinating watching people who don't like the results of the ARIC study argue against it Rather than engage with any number of valid criticisms, you are all trying to find that "silver bullet" to throw it away entirelyhttps://twitter.com/KetoCarnivore/status/1031171529235607553 …

You could, for example, point out that the absolute risk was minimal and that the practical implications have been wildly overblown by most of the people reporting on the study

You could make a strong case that the low-carb=death association is a result of residual confounding, and that it's hard to know exactly what these results mean

You could note that, while low-carb may have shown a slightly increased risk of death, this is almost certainly mitigated by weightloss in a successful LCHF diet

But instead, everyone is talking nonsense like "the researchers were incompetent!" It really is an amazing display of cognitive bias in action

The researchers were not incompetent, the study was well-done and interesting, and making factually incorrect statements about their statistical analysis merely makes you seem ignorant

P.S. another good criticism is that this study looked specifically at individuals at a high risk of atherosclerosis, thus these results may not be generalizable to your average person
